The drop in U.S. industrial output in September left oil prices weak on Monday as Brent fell while US prices rose only slightly. But both remain above $82 a barrel.
Both touched multi-year highs earlier in the day but enthusiasm for higher oil prices waned later. Brent crude for December delivery dropped 62 cents or 0.7% and finished the day at $82.26 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. Earlier, the global benchmark hit $86.04, the highest price since October 2018.
West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery managed a 12 cent increase or 0.1% and closed at $82.40, but only after hitting $83.37 earlier, the highest level since October 2014.
