BLM stops work on energy plan for New Mexico’s Chaco region

The Bureau of Land Management carried out a move last month in New Mexico that left conservationists and environmentalists puzzled.

The BLM abandoned work on a resource management plan in northwestern New Mexico’s historic Chaco region. The agency indicated that work on an update to the district’s Resource Management Plans had been scrapped and no replacement would be considered.

Capital and Main reported the plan, as laid out in a 976-page report, would have rewritten rules and regulations and restrictions for new oil and gas development covering more than 4 million acres of federal, private and Native lands in the San Juan Basin. Adding to the mystery is the response of the BLM which indicated that future plans will be announced after an evaluation of existing Resource Management Plans.
