Colorado officials upset over Xcel Energy power cutoff during 100 mph winds

When winds of 70 mph to 100 mph were forecast last week in Colorado, utility company Xcel Energy thought it was doing the right thing by implementing pre-planned power outages to more than 55,000 customers along the Front Range. It wanted to prevent wildfires.

Now Boulder County officials are critical of the utility for its “short notice.” Xcel took the action to cut power after the National Weather Service at 5 p.m. Friday forecasted wind gusts of up to 100 mph along the foothills Saturday into Sunday and sustained winds of up to 55 mph along the Interstate 25 corridor.

The Colorado Sun reported Boulder County’s Office of Disaster Management responded with criticism arfter more than 6,000 customers didn’t have restored power more than two days after the shut down.
