Legislators didn’t support New Mexico’s lavish oil and gas wastewater plan

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who flew to Dubai for the COP28 Climate Summit and made an extravagent announcement of a $500 million plan to buy treated drilling wastewater, just saw her idea go up in smoke.

She was the lone Governor to join the stage aat the conference some months ago but members of her Democratic legislature couldn’t go along with her. They closed their 2024 session without approving legislation to use $100 million in state funds to carry out the project. The state’s environmental agency plans to move ahead with a request for information on the issue with a March 31 deadline, reported Reuters.

The governor proposed purchasing the treated drilling wastewater and brakish water from underground sources to build a strategic water supply for the state. But she ran into opposition from even her supporters, including the environmental groups who have in the past bolstered some of her actions against the oil and gas industry.
