More abandoned wells targeted in Oklahoma this year

Oklahoma’s effort to plug abandoned or so-called “ophaned” wells will grow even more in 2024.

Nearly 600 wells are under contract to be plugged this year with the assistance of federal funds. Plugging orders have been issued for nearly 1,900 other abandoned wells.

However, according to a report by Mike Ray in the Southwest Ledger, there remains more than 18,000 other abandoned wells that have yet to go through the legal process to be targeted for plugging.
