Oil and gas rig counts tumble across the U.S. and in Oklahoma

Following a developing decline of oil and gas rig activity across the U.S., the number of active rigs in Oklahoma fell again in the past week.

Oklahoma’s count of 37 was down one from the previous week and compared to 42 oil and gas rigs reported one year ago, based on the rig report released by Baker Hughes Co.

Nationally, the count declined by four to 590 and included a loss of four oil rigs, leaving 488 active oil rigs in the U.S. The number of gas rigs active in the states over the past week remained at 98. However, the U.S. count is down 97 from a year ago when there were 687 active rigs. The decline included 64 oil rigs and 32 gas rigs.

Texas recorded a loss of two rigs, leaving 285 active in the state. The latest number compares to 347 reported a year ago. New Mexico, which had 104 rigs reported a year ago, saw a gain of one rig in the past week, reaching a level of 108. North Dakota remained at 32 rigs over the past week compared to the 36 it had last year at this time.

Louisiana’s count fell two to 39 while a year ago, theree were 50 active rigs in the state. The Red Top Rig Report showed Kansas remaining at a count of 32. Colorado was unchanged with 14 rigs, two fewer than a year earlier.

Pennsylvania remained at 21 rigs and Ohio had 10. Utah continued with 12 rigs. West Virginia’s count was unchanged with 5 rigs, far fewer than the 13 it had last year. Wyoming stayed at 11 rigs over the past week but still below the 17 reported a year ago.

The oil plays reflected the same loss of rigs. The nation’s most active, the Permian Basin declined one to 309. A year earlier, it haad 342 active rigs. The Eagle Ford was unchanged at 51 but 9 down from last year. The Williston saw no change with a count of 34, two fewer than one year earlier.

The Marcellus count continued at 25, down ten from last year. The Ardmore Woodford remained at 6 rigs while the Arkoma Woodford stayed at one rig. The count in the Cana Woodford fell one to 16.

It was yet another week of no drilling activity reported in the Barnett play, based on the Baker Hughes report.

The D-J Basin stayed at 10 rigs and the count in the Granite Wash fell one to three rigs. The Mississippian still had no reported drilling activity. The Utica was unchanged with 10 rigs.
