Oil wells were once drilled in the middle of Arkansas River—now they’re abandoned and polluting the river

Orphan oil wells litter riverbed of the Arkansas

A report by a Tulsa TV station shows that history is catching up with the state in terms of pollution of the Arkansas River.

KTUL TV revealed this week how former oil wells, drilled in the middle of the river and now abandoned, are also leaking and polluting the river.

One petroleum engineer estimates there could be as many as 50 of the abandoned wells in the middle of the river stretching from Bixby to Sand Springs.
