Transportation Commission to meet Monday

The bridge disaster that claimed six lives in Baltimore got the attention of Oklahoma Transportation Department leaders.

Transportation Executive Director Tim Gatz will give an update on the state of Oklahoma bridges to the commission during a Monday meeting of the Transportation Commission. In recent years, the state has made strong improvements to bridges around the state.

At one point a few decades ago, Oklahoma was recognized as one of the worst state for the condition of aging and deteriorating bridges.

The Commission meeting will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the R.A. Ward Transportation building, 200 N.E. 21st Street in Oklahoma City. The meeting will be available through livestream video online.

Gatz is also expected to present commissioners with Gov. Kevin Stitt’s proclamation declaring April 15-19 as Oklahoma’s “Work Zone Awareness Week.” The proclamation carries added significance following the death last week of a young construction worker at a bridge site on I-35 near Tonkawa.

Gatz will also discuss the transportation impact of the approaching total solar eclipse on April 8.

The Commission will also vote whether to award several construction contracts, among them a bridge construction project on US-75 in Glenpool and a reconstruction and resurfacing project on Gray St. in Norman. An update will be given on the progress of the I-40 interchange redesign and widening in Midwest City.
