Ted Jacobs – Director

In a career, equally split between the upstream and midstream sectors of the oil and gas industry and the
other half in academia, Ted Jacobs had the unique opportunity to develop and create what he calls a
“pracademic” style of curriculum. This curriculum entailed the combination of having top quality
university faculty, teaching the principles of core courses, while utilizing industry experts teach the
practical applications of those principles in upper division energy-related coursework. This pracademic
curriculum created a graduate that could hit the ground running and fluent in the vocabulary of the
industry.
Jacobs served as Director of the then Petroleum Land Management (PLM) program at The University of
Oklahoma from 1997-2006. At OU, he is credited with the resurrection of the program and grew that
program from 4 students to 200+ students. He placed 100% of his graduates in his nine years at OU. In
the Spring of 1999, he created and applied his “pracademic” concept that took the one dimensional PLM
major to a multi-interdisciplinary energy-focused curriculum geared to both the upstream and midstream
sectors of the energy industry. As a result of these major changes to the curriculum, the name was
changed from PLM to Energy Management.
In 2006 Jacobs was hired to the newly created position of Director of the Energy Management Center, at
The University of Tulsa (TU), where he developed the first Energy Management program at a private
university. He applied the “pracademic” blueprint, he developed at OU, to create a curriculum that
incorporated required upper-division coursework from all three of TU’s undergraduate colleges in
addition to the TU College of Law. The TU curriculum had a built-in upstream and midstream
concentration, which distinguished itself from other similar programs at the time. The success and
industry support of the TU undergraduate Energy Management program lead to the creation of the
School of Energy, Economics, Policy, and Commerce, within the TU Collins College of Business, in the
Spring of 2014. Jacobs left TU in the Spring of 2015.
Prior to his career in academia, Jacobs worked 20 years in the industry with the following companies:
Getty Oil Company, TXO Production Corp., Tidemark Exploration Company and The Energy
Companies of ONEOK. His positions included: Landman, Area Landman, District Landman, Land
Manager,
Gas Marketing Representative and Acquisitions Coordinator.
Jacobs is now semi-retired, as he pursues an entrepreneurial vision he conceived in 2002.
