AEP layoffs confirmed in 11 states

AEP, the parent company of Public Service Company of Oklahoma recently laid off 270 workers in an 11-state region.

It’s not believed many might have been let go in Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Office of Workforce Development.

WCMH TV news in Ohio reported the majority of the laoffs were in the utility provider’s Ohio branch and represented a small portion of AEP’s 17,000 workers. The station also was told that 170 of the firings were at the company’s corporate headquarters in Columbus, Ohio

It was reported that AEP did not follow Ohio’s WARN Act which required businesses to give advance notice of at least 60 days before any plant closures or mass layoffs.

“No WARN notice was required because the percentage of employees impacted is lower than the threshold of 33% of the total active workforce of an employer established in the law,” said a spokesman for AEP.
